A Little Advisements for Adjusting Newborn Nursery Bedding Sets as Your Little One Grows Older

Safety guidelines are important to know and understand before undergoing the simple process of purchasing crib bedding for your new baby. A number of toddler sanctuary groups have released what they believe is fit for the use of crib bedding. There are safety guidelines in place for a reason; you don’t want your child to suffocate in his or her sleep.

These recommendations advise that a baby should sleep on his or her back with no soft or loose bedding in the crib. While comforters, quilts, stuffed toys and pillows look cute, they and any other soft bedding items should never be in the crib with an infant. Going with the guidance, there should be no mattresses in the crib without fitted sheets to go with them. For safety reasons, blankets placed in cribs need to be well-secured near the end of the crib and should not come up higher than the baby’s chest.

Crib bumpers usually will not block a child’s breathing because they are tightly attached to the rails of the crib, but many doctors still don’t think they’re good to have in the crib. The emergence of new baby bumpers may alleviate prior concerns over their usage. A sign of the confusion surrounding the usefulness of crib bumpers is the fact that they are still included in most baby bedding. The parent must decide if a crib bumper is the right choice for their baby’s crib and should take into consideration the many conflicting opinions on the matter.

You should follow the American Academy of Pediatrics guidance on keeping crib bedding to a minimum for the baby’s first year, until the child can move enough to keep bedding out of his or her face. Prior to age 12 months, however, some adjustments to the crib’s contents may still be necessary to prevent injuries. It is important that once a baby is able to move on their own, and has gained the ability to sit upright or pull themselves up to standing with the use of the crib bars, that the mattress be lowered and any items that would facilitate getting out of the crib be removed. Crib bumpers can be a stepping stool for babies to climb out of the crib and injure themselves, so remove them to prevent such accidents.

Luckily after a year old, the danger of SIDS decreases and you may now add bedding items into your baby’s crib; these items can be for decorative purposes, as well as for comfort. Identical bed skirt and comforters have the potential to go with the baby room decor. Baby fuzzy blankets make for great cuddling and provide much needed warmth. Most toddlers like having a cuddly toy in bed to snuggle with and provide comfort overnight; however you should stay away from pillows until your child is almost two years old.
